Vina Maquis Lien red wine blend from Colchagua Valley, Chile

Maquis Lien red wine from Chile2004 ViÑa Maquis Lien Red Wine

Tasting Notes
A deep violet color, there are several layers of complex aromas. The ripe fruit is intense, but fresh and clean, with blackberries and plums from the Syrah and Malbec, red fruit, black chocolate and spicy aromas from Cabernet Franc, Carmenere and Petit Verdot.

The mouth is wonderfully balanced and rich. A core of ripe fruit and silky tannins provide roundness, structure, smooth mouthfeel and a full mid-palate. The mineral qualities and juicy dark berry flavors along with well-integrated oak components give the wine depth and refined elegance.

The Origin
Maquis Lien is crafted from grapes grown at a unique vineyard site in the heart of the Colchagua Valley and is a blend of Syrah, Carmenere, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. No two vintages are alike, as the percentage of each varietal used change from year to year in order to highlight the unique qualities of that year as well as the exceptional terroir of the Colchagua Valley. A "Super Chilean" wine, Maquis Lien combines power and supple fruit with elegant refined tannins.

In Chile's native Mapuche language, lien means "silver metal"—a reference to colonial Spanish coins that were once melted to make fine jewelry, like the silver lizard that is depicted on the Maquis Lien label.

Viticulture and Winemaking
All grapes are handpicked beginning with Malbec at the end of March, followed by Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petit Verdot, and ending with Carmenere in May. Bunches and berries are sorted and pressed. Before fermentation, the juice undergoes a cold maceration (10° c) for about 5 days to extract aromas and color. Maquis Lien is aged in 100% French oak for 12 months.
