"An island within the Colchagua Valley."
- Juan Alejandro Jofré, Chief Winemaker
Located in Valle de Colchagua, Maquis Lien’s vineyard terroir is strongly influenced by its geographic position in the Colchagua Valley: bounded by the Tinguiririca River and the Chimbarongo Creek—two large waterways that once brought alluvial stones and sediments from the Andes. This affects both the climate and soil of the property to create a unique terroir unlike any other in the Colchagua Valley.
Viña Maquis is able to reap the benefits of this natural formation: the rivers act as pathways for cool coastal breezes that help moderate the warm Colchagua summers. This agreeable Mediterranean environment allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, which contribute to the intensity of fruit, while the cool breezes preserve floral and fresh fruit aromas.
In addition to creating this ideal climate, the river adds rich minerals to the soil—instrumental in providing the refined sophisticated character in Maquis Lien. This soil is originated by stones and sediments brought from the Andes Mountains by the two rivers over thousands of years. The top layer is clay silt with gravel underneath. This combination stresses the vines, which results in smaller more concentrated berries and distinctive mineral flavors.
