2006 Viña Maquis Lien Red Wine
Tasting Notes
Maquis Lien 2006 has an intense and deep red-violet color. On the nose, it is clean, intense and concentrated, with ripe black fruit, berry, prune and spice notes, as well as black pepper, mint, and black olive notes. Some black chocolate, mocha, smoke and tobacco notes also appear, which provide it with great complexity. The mouth shows great balance; fresh, with an acidity that gives it juiciness and brightness. Tannins are extremely silky, elegant and sweet; they fill the mid-palate and offer a firm structure, volume and roundness, their softness remaining for a long while. The oak used is 100% French, which gives it more complexity and elegance.
The Origin
Maquis Lien is the fulfillment of a dream shared for all the people that works at Maquis, to produce a wine that captures the essence of a unique place as Maquis is. Lien is a terroir wine - a very important issue to understand as you drink it. The land where the vines are planted is quite unique as it is surrounded by two rivers, which differentiates Maquis's vineyards from others in Colchagua Valley. We often say that the vineyards of Maquis, located between the two rivers, is located on their own island with its own climate and soils. From this unique place, and with all the efforts of Maquis team, was born this blend of 5 different varieties: Syrah (42%), Carmenere (30%), Cabernet Franc (12%), Petit Verdot (9%) and Malbec (7%).
In Chile's native Mapuche language, lien means "silver metal" - a reference to colonial Spanish coins that were once melted to make fine jewelry, like the silver lizard that is depicted on the Maquis Lien label.
Viticulture and Winemaking
The 2005-2006 season saw less thermal accumulation on average, not as a result of the average peak temperatures which was similar to previous years. Rather, the average lows were cooler than we had observed in previous years. During the ripening period, we saw high temperatures during January, which fell-off in the second half of February. This meant that ripening happened later than usual. Generally the wines present good quality tannins, are soft and elegant, with good yet delicate concentration.
