Origin—something extremely important to the Hurtado family—starts in the vineyard. Some of the estate vineyards on the property are nearly a century old. A dedication to the vineyard is why Viña Maquis selected world-renowned viticulture consultant, Xavier Chone manage their vineyard. One of the most respected viticuluralists in the world, Xavier’s clients include: Opus One, Dalle Valle, Leoville Las Cases, Cheval Blanc and Domaine de la Romanée Conti.

"We have been working with Xavier for almost 3 years and we feel that having him as a consultant instead of a well-known winemaker clearly shows where we think the focus should be if you are committed to producing high quality wines. We focus on producing the very best grapes and then have a simple but careful winemaking that brings up as much of the character and personality of the terroir as possible."
- Ricardo Rivadeneira Hurtado, Managing Director and Winemaker

Viña Maquis' soils were formed by the depositing of material brought in by the Tinguiririca River and Chimbarongo Stream, with the mineral types and depths occuring in strips. These strips determine the suitability of the soil for each of the varietals used in the production of Maquis Lien as well as the fertility and irrigation management. This allows Viña Maquis to achieve the maximum quality in each vineyard and develop different varietal characteristics accoding to the type of soil where the vineyards are planted.

Vineyard management is meticulous the use of chemicals and sprays is minimal. The viticulture team focuses on encouraging small, tightly clustered grapes and low yields per vine in order to develop deep, complex flavors. During harvest, grapes are picked by blocks—hand selecting only the ripest grapes—these blocks are sometimes picked through 5 times over the harvest, showing the great care that goes into finding pristine fruit.
